So why did I join Nielen Schuman? For me It all started in the spring of 2013 when I decided I was no longer happy with my job at the corporate finance division of a major accountancy firm. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the actual work, but I felt I was spending too much time on assembly line-like assignments, while I wanted to be delegated real responsibilities. Time for a change, so I put out my feelers in search for a firm where my talents would fully be utilised and fostered and where I would get more exposure and responsibilities.

I ended up working for Nielen Schuman. A smaller firm than I was used to, but with a lot more room for initiative and opportunities for personal growth. Their approach was clear and simple: bringing corporate finance back to the essence. But what is the essence? To me it’s looking out for our clients, advising on transactions for their benefit in the realisation that my own success is intertwined with theirs.

Our clients need financing or M&A, to grow and develop their businesses. This is what drives me to go above and beyond every single day. To advise them on what is the best deal for them , so they can realise their vision for the future. Last year I got especially excited about a deal, we were selling one of the largest family-owned agricultural business in the Netherlands. Over the years the owner had transformed his company into a true multinational, which now includes sites in The Netherlands, Morocco and Senegal. We ended up visiting the Moroccan site a couple of times, a fantastic experience. Not only because we got to see what we were selling, but also because it offered a glimpse into someone’s life’s work. Of course we had to put in a lot of hard work and our perseverance was tested, especially during the transaction’s climax. But the thrill of completing the deal successfully for our client and exceeding his expectations is what makes me get out of bed every morning.

So why Nielen Schuman? I don’t just work here because the work is intellectually stimulating, or because our diverse team is resourceful, entrepreneurial and committed, but because the work is fulfilling and challenging and gives me a sense of purpose. In my opinion this is what having a successful career is all about.
